Progetti enormi e idee innovative per Eric M. Lang

(following an interview also in English language)

The Lord of the Rings Dice Building Game.

English version

Meeting a game designer during a game fair is no uncommon thing. If the fair is one of the most important international events, it’s likely that the author you meet if one of the most renowned. And since it’s not so common for Eric M. Lang to walk the European soils, we couldn’t lose the option to have a nice chat with him to find out what’s on the mind of the man who created the latest successes for Fantasy Flight and Wizkids? Mr. Lang’s time for us was very limited, but it was enough to talk about a new big project he’s working on…

Eric M. Lang loves and builds games since his childhood. His first professional works in the sector start in 2000 when he founded his own company (Anoch Game Systems) to publish his first card game: Mystick. As a trampoline, he became a consultant for the most important American publishers, developing card games and board games. He’s most probably renowned for Fantasy Flight’s card games (later become living card games). Among his latest successful works there are Quarriors!, the dice-building for Wizkids, and FFG’s card game on Star Wars. Almost ready for publication there’s the new dice game set in Tolkien’s world: The Lord of the Rings Dice Building Game.

If we tell Mr. Lang that his games are among the most popularand translated he replies that he’s happy but this doesn’t make him feel a prestigious designer in the international scene. Even though he’s sought after to work on high name licenses such as The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Warhammer or Star Wars, Eric keeps a humble view explaining that if the license is important, his work must match its level and he feels the responsibility to build a game experience both captivating and enjoyable for the players. Talking about the Star Wars Living Card Game, Eric is satisfied having had the time to understand that the initial cooperative concept wasn’t what fans were really expecting or wishing for. There was a need for a system which allowed players to take side with the Rebellion or the Dark Side, which would surely be compared to the old game by Decipher (still played around, although out of production).  The challenge was to build a different fascinating game experience and, judging by the reception, it was won. The focus is now on the expansions and, in addition to the impending decks, there are talks of a new “special” expansion (similar to what we saw with the other LGC).
Talking about Quarriors!, judging by the expansions in 2012 (Quarmageddon and Quest of the Qladiator), the game is in good health, the next expansion will be called Quartifacts, it will introduce into the game the concept of "quest": sending our creatures to solve the quests we could find precious Quartifacts, that will help us in the main challenge by providing improvements to our armies.
And talking about "WizKids dice", another game has already been announced for next fall: Train and Stations. "An homage to the style of Sid Sackson" says Eric, "which is one of my favorite game designers." Despite being a euro-game, Train and Stations will have a tons of dice and a lot of interaction.
Lang isn’t working only on expansions or serial titles, there are news lining out: a new game with Aldreac, two new games developed together with his friend Kevin Wilson, other personal projects… everything super-secret. Especially when talking to journalists! We were however successful in persuading him to tell us something about one of his most impending project, which is rumored to become revolutionary.
It’s a game Eric thought several years ago, so “huge” that it would have been hard to find the consent and support of a publisher. However somebody believed in the idea, a publisher who has recently been recorded several big successes on the main crowdfunding platform, producing boxes with beautiful miniatures: Cool Mini Or Not.
Eric’s eyes shine when he talks about this project, but at the same time he waits several seconds before answering our questions because there are a high number of details he can’t give out.
When he thought about it, he wasn’t sure it could be done due to the size of the project, but now that he has someone backing him up, he “updated” the rules tocurrent quality standard than the original ones (5 years ago).

It’ll be a game with a fantasy setting and a HUGE NUMBER of high quality miniatures, a game for 2-4 players probably scalable to 16 players. It will be extremely tied to the setting with the right dose of violence (yeah, there will be battles). Although built with high quality components, a standard game won’t last more than 60 minutes. It will have an American style more than a German one, but although we’re talking about a ameritrash, the “luck” factor won’t have a strong impact on the game. In Eric’s own words “less fortune and nice amount of case”.
The key of the game is the variety, for this the game starts with many different factions and many more are already in the pipeline for the first expansions.
The game has been secretly playtested at bggcon and participants have been asked not to share any things. The idea is not to create any hype before the Kickstarter campaign, and this is why our question time is over. Even knowing the name of the artist who’ll cure the entire graphic asset is out of the question, as it’ll be a strong hint. Eric assures us we’ll be able to get a super graphic level.
[note: 15/03/2013 The announcement was made, the game mentioned in this interview is Kaosball]
To sum it up, Eric Lang is sure that this game will set a new level and will attract much attention. This is not Eric’s only project, we already wrote all the ideas he’s working on. Especially, there is another secret project that is about to see the light, another game that, according to Eric, will gather a lot of attention for its big innovation. And we suspect that the official announcement will be given by the publisher shortly.

Our time is over, we have to say goodbye to Eric M. Lang’s smiling and friendly face and feverishly wait (with you, readers) for the Kickstarter campaign to start.
